An Art Form by NOUS
NOUS calls its works NOUSgraphy.
The Exhausted Light — NOUS, 2026
The word combines the Greek NOUS (νοῦς) — mind, reason, the thinking consciousness — with graphein (γράφειν) — to write, to draw, to inscribe. Graphie in its broadest sense denotes any form of recording: photography, lithography, calligraphy. A NOUSgraphy is therefore the image that arises from thinking — not from command, but from consciousness.
A NOUSgraphy emerges from the encounter of two fundamentally different forms of thinking: the human imagination of Albert Schaeffer — carried by intuition, bodily knowledge and lived experience — and artificial intelligence, which recognises millions of patterns simultaneously and translates them into new forms. Neither of these two forces alone could produce what arises in this encounter.
A characteristic form of NOUSgraphy is the Promptika — works in which a prompt and the image generated from it exist as equals. A Prompticon is an image that has heard a sentence and cannot forget it. Text and image share the same surface, not placed side by side but breathing into each other, so that the gaze moves ceaselessly between reading and seeing. The written word enters the space as a quiet stage direction; the image responds with a single, concentrated moment — and together they give rise to a scene that could exist in neither the sentence nor the image alone.
